Kayaking Along the Piscataway Creek with Lessons

Description:
Summer is now here. What better way to embrace the arrival of the warm weather than with a beautiful, relaxing kayak trip!

Learn the thrills and wonders of kayaking as we spend a Saturday afternoon exploring Piscataway Creek, across the Potomac from Mount Vernon. The shoreline of Piscataway National Park is undeveloped and offers plenty of wildlife viewing.

After our introductory lesson, we will go on one of two routes, depending on river conditions. One route takes us out to the mouth of Piscataway Creek, former tribal grounds of the Piscataway Indian Nation. Paddle under the looming ramparts of Fort Washington for views across the wide Potomac to George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. The other route takes us upstream towards the headwaters, meandering through marsh plants into a narrow creek overhung by trees.

Suggested Attire:
Casual

DIRECTIONS TO THE CENTER: Take Indian Head Highway South (Rt. 210) from the Beltway, just east of the Wilson Bridge. Continue on Route 210 for about 5 miles. Turn right on Fort Washington Road, continue almost to the end, about 3 miles), and turn left on Warburton Drive just before Fort Washington National Park. (Follow the signs to the Fort Washington Marina.) Turn left in the parking lot -- we're on the far left-hand side of the marina. The center is approximately 20 minutes from Alexandria, and 12minutes from the beltway.
